How Long Does Jasmine Rice Take in the Instant Pot?

Jasmine rice takes around 13 minutes to cook in an Instant Pot from scratch. See the recipe below for complete cooking instructions.

Jasmine Rice Vs. Basmati Rice

Although jasmine rice and basmati rice are similar in appearance, they are different aromatic rice varieties.

Uncooked grains of basmati rice is slightly longer and sharper than jasmine rice. When cooked, the jasmine rice holds more moisture than basmati rice making it moist and stickier than the fluffier basmati rice.

You can also cook basmati rice in an Instant Pot. However, you may wish to soak it for 30-60 minutes before cooking.

Tips for Cooking Jasmine Rice in the Instant Pot

Rice to Water Ratio for Jasmine Rice in the Instant Pot

If you use white jasmine rice, you can use a 1:1 ratio of water to rice

However, suppose you want to cook brown rice in the Instant Pot.

In that case, you may wish to double the water you use and use a 2:1 ratio of 2 cups of water to 1 cup of wholegrain jasmine rice. This will help you achieve fluffy brown jasmine rice.

Do You Need to Wash Jasmine Rice Before Cooking in the Instant Pot?

Yes. Wash your rice until the water runs almost clear (about 3 or 4 rinses). This can help you achieve fluffy jasmine rice.

Do You Need to Soak Jasmine Rice Before Cooking in the Instant Pot?

As you are cooking the jasmine rice in the Instant Pot, which cooks using pressure and high temperatures, you do not need to soak the rice before cooking

This is because soaking can make the delicate jasmine rice mushy or overcooked.

If you are cooking basmati rice in an Instant Pot, you may want to soak the rice for half an hour to soften the frains.

Why Do You Need to Add Salt to the Rice When Cooking?

Like cooking pasta in salted water, adding ¼ tsp salt to your Instant Pot before cooking your jasmine rice can help enhance the rice’s flavor and overall dish.

If you add salt to the water before cooking, the rice will absorb the flavor during cooking.

However, you may need to add more salt to achieve the same flavor if you add it after cooking.

What to Serve With Jasmine Rice

Jasmine rice is a versatile carbohydrate. Therefore, you can serve it with dishes from different cuisines!

Popular choices include:

  • Sweet and sour chicken
  • Stir fry
  • Chili con carne
  • Red Thai curry
  • Mango and coconut rice

One of my favorite recipes to serve with jasmine rice from an Instant Pot is my easy Hainanese Chicken rice with cucumber and cilantro.

Jasmine Rice Nutrition

As a staple carbohydrate in many people’s diets, jasmine rice is a great food to have on hand in your pantry.

Compared to long-grain white rice, jasmine rice contains almost the same macro and micro-nutrients.

For example, jasmine rice contains small amounts of iron, calcium, magnesium, and vitamins B1 and B3

Suppose you are looking for the most nutritious rice. In that case, brown rice is your best option as it is less processed and contains significantly more fiber.

This is because brown rice contains the outer layer of the rice, known as the bran, making it more nutrient-dense than white rice.

How to Store Jasmine Rice

Jasmine Rice in the Fridge

If you plan to use your jasmine rice within the next few days, you can store it in an air-tight food container and place it in the fridge.

Be sure to let the rice cool before transferring it to the refrigerator, or you risk raising your fridge’s temperature.

Cooked jasmine rice can be stored in your fridge for about four days

Jasmine Rice in the Freezer

Leave your rice to cool completely. Then, portion your cooked rice into one or two serving portions and pop it into freezer-safe bags or air-tight food containers. Store in the freezer for a maximum of 6 months.

Uncooked Jasmine Rice

You can store uncooked jasmine rice in your pantry till you are ready to cook it using an Instant Pot. The rice can keep indefinitely as long as you store it in a cool, dark, and dry place.

How to Reheat Precooked Jasmine Rice

Add 1 tbsp of water and pop it in the microwave for about 1 minute.

What is an Instant Pot?

The Instant Pot is a programmable pressure cooker that speeds up cooking by 2 to 10 times while using up to 70% less energy.

In short, it’s a very multi-purpose cooking appliance and has been a kitchen appliance staple of mine for the last two years. As a result, it’s simply the perfect go-to appliance for busy weeknights!

If you’re unsure what size Instant Pot to get, here is my size recommendation:

I’m using the Instant Pot Mini 3 Quart for all my Instant Pot recipes.
